5.0 out of 5 stars Expansive in scope and storytelling

This was truly an enjoyable read. A classic tale of good intentions gone awry and the how power of absolute authority can corrupt even the most noble of leaders. Mutants, in a longtime struggle with humanity for control of the planet, launch a decisive nuclear strike that drives a group of government and military officials to an underground bunker to survive until the government of the United States can be restored on the surface. What drives the story from that point is the interpersonal conflicts between the civilian and military leadership.
It's actually two stories. First, how the Presidential line of succession eventually falls upon the Secretary of State and how reacts to setbacks in their plan for survival. Then the story jumps to the distant future where the inhabitants of this bunker finally emerge to a very different planet Earth, but one where the mutant threat still exists.
One of the greatest aspects of the sci-fi genre is how science itself affects the lives of people's lives and how they deal with it. This story is no exception. The survivors' technology allows them to surmount even the death of the physical body and continue on. This has especially significant consequences for the survivors' leadership and military contingent as they are pitted in a struggle for power.
One side uses this technological gift of resurrected life to grab power, which eventually hardens and corrupts the other side into equal levels of cruelty blood thirst. However, the way a crafty former spy turns a near death experience and second chance at life provides a very clever twist to the story and gives the audience hope in the idea of mankind triumphing despite facing an existential threat.
5.0 out of 5 stars Sci-Fi for people who don't like sci-fi

I am NOT a science fiction fan at all. Nothing against it, it's just not my chosen genre to read. However, since I have known Mr. Stone for 25 years, obviously I had to buy his book.
Wow. I was caught up in the story very quickly. It reads like a novel - not a science fiction novel - and the characters are really intriguing. As a result, I now am getting ready to read the sequel because I need to know what happens next.
Highly recommend.
5.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable story and introduction to a post apocolyptic world

The book starts off with the world coming to an end and covers the events of a group of survivors in an underground facility. Lots of drama and conflict.

4.0 out of 5 stars My Gamma World RPG Fiction Wishes Came True!
Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2023
As a fan of the Gamma World post apocalyptic role playing game published in the 1980s by the now defunct TSR, I can honestly say I have been looking for fiction that truly captures the feeling of that game experience.
Wizards of the Coast released some novels when the most recent official release of the game (the Gamma World based on the 4th Edition of D&D), but those didn't quite connect with me in the way I wanted. This book, though, ticked all the boxes for me.
I highly recommend this book for those who want fiction that oozes Gamma World. There is, of course, plenty here for any sci fi / pulp fan as well. It is a fun read!

Moves along at comic book pace - fast and fun!
Thoroughly enjoyable post apocalyptic read. Interesting characters are introduced, move the story along, add then (some) meet an unfortunate ending. Post apocalyptic can be tough and waits for no one.

This book was not what I expected from this genre. It had action from start to finish, creative, easy to read and understand. It was hard to put down. I highly recommend this book!! Looking forward to the sequel.

As a lover of sci-fi, this book was engaging from start to finish. If the world of Fallout and Post Apocalyptic scenarios is your jam, this book will scratch that itch. Can't wait for the next installment!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, recommend

Good book, new author, really started finding its stride twords the latter half. This is a world building book in what looks to be a very interesting series to come. It gets 4 out of 5 stars only because of personal preference, as the 1st part of the book was very much military sci fi, and Im a fantasy sci fi fan. Very much recommend this book because the world it is setting up looks to be a good series.

I could not put the book down! One thing I love is action/adventure and this book had it all, including mutants, military, one smart robot with a great accent, and the ever-present quest for control by all parties involved. You definitely sit on the edge of your chair reading this book!

1.0 out of 5 starsPoorly Written, Too Bad
Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2024
It's been quite a while since I have opened a book and been so thrown off by the terrible use of language. This piece is inundated with grammatical errors and poor word choices, to the point of making it almost unreadable. There's also poorly devised characters and the first few chapters are downright silly in the way people are portrayed. I kept thinking to myself, "no one talks like that".
It's disappointing because PA fiction with a strong dose of the fantastic is rarely attempted these days. This one just doesn't meet the mark...in any way.

This was very good! A completely mad adventure, great pace & tension. Lots of ups & down, ins & outs to the storyline! A really great read, it was super interesting & kept my interest right until the end! Well written, something a little different!

5.0 out of 5 stars Richard P Stone does it again!!
Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2023
I would love to peek into the mind of Mr Stone it must be a wild swirl of part reality part way out there, characters real or futuristic , situations and action just so much unthinkable until you start reading. With Mr Stone’s books you can’t just read a little and put it down and say I’ll read more tomorrow. His books make me say one more chapter then after that chapter I’ll say well just one more….. he doesn’t let things get stale and makes us think about different possibilities and keeps things moving. I love his work and wonder what to expect next from him. Hope to find out soon!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bring on the mutants...

Great follow up book to Survivors of the Mutant Dawn! Readers tag along with a band of mutants as the journey across the post apoclayptic landscape. Stone does a great job dishing up easy to get caught up in fun and excitement. Post apocalypse can be fatal - developed character who appear in the story may meet quick and lethal ends.
We also catch up with a character from the first book, Survivors of the Mutant Dawn. It's obvious he'll play a part later on.
